North Woods

Back to Maine Map

These Northwestern Maine Wild lands are completely undeveloped and consist of the northern terminus of the Appalachian Mountains with hundreds of remote lakes, rivers and ponds. The famed Allagash, Aroostook and St. John Rivers drain these beautiful working timberlands which are bordered on the North and West by Quebec. This area contains Maine’s highest population of moose and bear and is renowned for its huge whitetail deer and prolific grouse population. Camps in this area fish predominantly for native brook trout and landlocked salmon. It is also the only area in Maine with Musky fishing. Other wildlife include pine marten, fisher, Canadian lynx, eagles, woodcock, loons, coyotes, osprey and a few lone wolves. Access is completely by logging roads or seaplane. All of the area is private timberlands, land preserves or wilderness parks and is gated with road use fees charged. There are virtually no services other than sporting camps here.
